Diamond Buying Guide

Your comprehensive guide to selecting the perfect diamond, from setting a budget to choosing the ideal shape and certification.

Setting Your Budget

The most important step in purchasing a diamond is establishing a budget that feels comfortable. The outdated guideline of spending two or three months' salary is just that — outdated. A diamond purchase should bring joy, not financial stress. At KM Fine Jewelry, we believe that a thoughtfully selected diamond at any price point can be breathtakingly beautiful.

Once you have a budget in mind, our gemologists can help you maximize value by guiding you toward the optimal combination of the 4Cs. Small, strategic decisions — such as choosing a diamond just below a carat milestone or selecting a near-colorless grade over colorless — can free up significant budget for a higher cut grade or a more elaborate setting.

We also offer flexible financing options for those who prefer to spread payments over time. Speak with our team about the plans available to you.

Choosing the Right Shape

Diamond shape is one of the most personal choices in the buying process. Each shape has its own character, and the right choice depends on the wearer's style, hand shape, and aesthetic preferences. Here is an overview of the most popular shapes we carry:

Round Brilliant

The most popular diamond shape, accounting for roughly 75% of all diamonds sold. Its 58 facets are mathematically optimized to maximize light return, making it the most brilliant of all shapes. Ideal for those who want classic elegance and maximum sparkle.

Princess

A square shape with sharp, uncut corners and exceptional brilliance. The princess cut is a modern favorite that pairs beautifully with both solitaire and channel-set band designs. It typically appears larger than a round diamond of the same carat weight due to its diagonal measurement.

Oval

An elongated shape that creates the illusion of greater size and makes the finger appear longer and more slender. Oval diamonds offer brilliance comparable to a round while providing a more distinctive, contemporary look. Watch for the “bow-tie effect” — a dark area across the center — which varies in visibility based on cut quality.

Cushion

A square or rectangular shape with rounded corners and larger facets that produce beautiful broad flashes of light. Sometimes called a “pillow cut,” this romantic shape has been popular for over two centuries and lends a vintage quality to any setting.

Emerald

A rectangular step-cut diamond with long, elegant lines and a hall-of-mirrors effect. Rather than the sparkle of brilliant cuts, emerald-cut diamonds offer a sophisticated, understated beauty. Because of its large, open table, clarity is particularly important in this shape — we recommend VS2 or higher.

Pear

A teardrop shape that combines the brilliance of a round with the elongation of a marquise. Pear-shaped diamonds are versatile, looking elegant in pendants, earrings, and rings alike. When worn as a ring, the pointed end is traditionally oriented toward the fingertips.

Marquise

An elongated shape with pointed ends that maximizes carat weight, making the diamond appear larger than it is. The marquise creates a dramatic, regal silhouette on the hand and has a storied history dating back to 18th-century French royalty.

Prioritizing the 4Cs

Not all 4Cs carry equal visual weight. Understanding which characteristics to prioritize will help you get the most beautiful diamond for your budget. Here is our recommended order of priority:

  1. 1. Cut (highest priority): Cut has the single greatest impact on how a diamond looks. Always select the highest cut grade your budget allows. An Excellent or Very Good cut will make any diamond look its best.
  2. 2. Color: For white gold or platinum settings, aim for G-I range. For yellow or rose gold, J-K grades blend beautifully with the warm metal tone and offer significant savings.
  3. 3. Clarity: Most inclusions are invisible to the naked eye. A VS2 or SI1 grade typically offers an eye-clean appearance at a fraction of the cost of higher clarity grades.
  4. 4. Carat: Consider the overall dimensions of the diamond rather than fixating on the carat number. A well-cut 0.90 carat diamond can appear as large as a poorly cut 1.00 carat stone.

Understanding Certification

A diamond certificate (also called a grading report) is an independent assessment of a diamond's quality characteristics by a gemological laboratory. It serves as your diamond's identity document and provides assurance that the quality you are paying for is the quality you are receiving.

The two most respected laboratories are the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the International Gemological Institute (IGI). GIA has long been considered the gold standard for natural diamond grading, with the most consistent and conservative standards in the industry. IGI has emerged as a leading authority for lab-grown diamond certification and has expanded its reputation significantly in recent years.

We strongly recommend purchasing only certified diamonds. At KM Fine Jewelry, every diamond in our collection comes with full certification from GIA or IGI. For a deeper comparison, visit our certifications guide.

Natural vs. Lab-Grown Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds. They are created in controlled environments using either High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) processes that replicate the conditions under which natural diamonds form in the earth. Even expert gemologists cannot distinguish them without specialized equipment.

The primary differences between natural and lab-grown diamonds are origin, rarity, and price. Natural diamonds are billions of years old and are inherently finite, which contributes to their enduring value. Lab-grown diamonds are a more accessible option, typically priced 60-80% lower than their natural counterparts of equivalent quality, making them an excellent choice for buyers who want maximum size and quality within a given budget.

At KM Fine Jewelry, we carry both natural and lab-grown diamonds and respect each customer's preference. Both options are beautiful, durable, and suitable for everyday wear. Our team is here to help you understand the trade-offs so you can make the choice that is right for you.

Choosing the Right Setting

The setting is the stage on which your diamond performs. It influences how the diamond looks, how it catches light, and how secure it is during daily wear. Here are the most popular setting styles:

  • Solitaire: A single diamond held by four or six prongs. The most timeless and versatile style, allowing maximum light exposure to the stone.
  • Halo: A center diamond encircled by a ring of smaller diamonds, adding brilliance and making the center stone appear larger.
  • Pave: Tiny diamonds set closely together along the band, creating a continuous surface of sparkle that complements the center stone.
  • Three-Stone: A center diamond flanked by two side stones, symbolizing past, present, and future. A meaningful and visually striking choice.
  • Bezel: A metal rim encircles the diamond, holding it securely in place. Ideal for active lifestyles and offers a sleek, modern aesthetic.
  • Cathedral: Arches of metal rise from the band to hold the diamond, elevating it for maximum visibility and light exposure.

The choice of metal also plays a role. Platinum is the most durable and hypoallergenic, while 18k and 14k white, yellow, and rose gold each offer distinct aesthetics at varying price points. Our design team can help you pair the perfect setting with your chosen diamond.

Tips from Our Experts

  • View the diamond in person or via high-quality video: Certificates provide data, but only your eyes can judge beauty. We offer 360-degree imagery and in-store viewing for every diamond.
  • Consider the wearer's lifestyle: An active person may benefit from a bezel setting and a more durable metal choice. A more sedentary lifestyle allows for more delicate designs.
  • Do not fixate on a single metric: A diamond is a holistic experience. The best diamond is one that looks beautiful to you, regardless of what the certificate says.
  • Ask about fluorescence: Faint to medium blue fluorescence can actually make a diamond in the I-K color range appear whiter and can be a valuable hidden benefit.
  • Take your time: A diamond is a significant purchase. Our team is here to answer every question without pressure. Schedule a consultation and explore at your own pace.
  • Insure your purchase: We recommend obtaining jewelry insurance promptly after purchase. We can provide the appraisal documentation you will need.
